The Farm Life
Amber Bos, a sophomore at HBC, has a passion for working on her farm. The Bos farm is located about a mile out of Hills and is made up with a great team of workers including Amber, her dad (Ken), her mom (Tammy), and her little sister (Annie).
Life on a farm can be very hard. Some of the chores Amber has to do is feeding two pens of cattle and she also help out at the dairy. Usually on schooldays she will do the chores sometime after school, so roughly around 3:30 - 4:00 and then she will go help at the dairy after she is done with her chores on her farm.

Her farm consists of a variety of animals. They have holsteins and Amber tends to feed those and they also have black angus cows. They usually feed the holsteins beanstalk bales and the black angus get fed a mixed ration and the dairy cows are usually fed a mixed ration too. For the two pens of holsteins a guard rail is set up and not a lot, but a good amount of beanstalks is put into it for them to eat out of. When their farm has sick animals they have a portable round pen that can be put into the pen with the sick animal in it and then they put the calf in it. After they get the calf in the round pen they usually will give it a shot to help heal them and get them back to full health.

Amber and her family do a very great job of taking care of the animals on their farm and the farm itself. She would like to continue her job on farm and follow her mom and dad’s footsteps in farming in the future.

Life of an Assistant Coach
Darin DeBoer is the assistant coach for the Hills-Beaver Creek varsity volleyball team and is head coach for the JV team. He has been the assistant coach for three years now. He is a great coach in my mind and does a very good job on coaching us girls and getting us ready for the varsity level. Darin has a wonderful wife Rebecca who comes to all of the games to watch him coach and she also takes care of their two little boys, Grady and Graham.
Darin led the JV to a great winning season with 13 wins and losing only 2. The team did excellent in Darin’s words, he said that the team worked together this season and were able to continue to work together during the whole season. There was a variety of girls on JV and Darin used that to his ability and moved some girls around to different positions. As a member of JV I felt like it would work sometimes, and it helped because it let us girls try new spots that we wouldn’t have usually played.

We need to work on our attitudes for next year. We have to have an attitude for winning and an attitude to change according to Darin. He doesn’t focus on winning or just having fun, he focuses on winning because winning is fun. Darin said that his favorite part of his job was dealing with people like Grace Holthaus because of the way she is and how she acts during games and practices. The motto according to Darin is “One heartbeat, one sound.”
Darin coaches with Meghan Leuthold and Susie Bork. Having multiple coaches is good according to Darin because then you can bounce ideas off of them and you can get a different perspective on how things are done. Darin was a great coach to have this year, and has always been one. He does such an amazing job helping us girls get ready for the next level and teaching us how to work together as a team. He really emphasized that we need to work as a team, which is the only way to get things done. |
